Network Intelligence & Private Cell Detection
By the CellInfo Dev Team | Published: 4th June 2026
πΆ NEW: WiFi Diagnostics Tab
A dedicated WiFi analyser built for network engineers β right inside CellInfo. See everything about your WiFi connection at a glance, diagnose coverage issues, and understand how WiFi and cellular work together on your device.
- Full Radio Details: WiFi standard (4/5/6/6E/7), frequency band, channel, channel width (up to 320 MHz for WiFi 7), signal strength with quality rating, and separate RX/TX link speeds.
- Nearby AP Scanner: See every WiFi network your device can detect β sorted by signal strength, with your connected AP highlighted. Tap the scan button to refresh.
- Channel Congestion Map: Visual bar chart showing how many access points are on each channel across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Colour-coded from green (free) to red (congested) with a recommended best channel.
- WiFi Calling (VoWiFi) Status: See whether your voice calls route over WiFi or cellular. Shows registration state, domain (Home/Roaming), and voice path β so you know if your calls are using WiFi Calling or falling back to the mobile network.
- Handover Tracking: Monitors when your phone switches between WiFi and cellular in real-time. Shows each transition with timestamp, signal strength at the moment of switch, and reason. Helps diagnose unstable connections where your phone keeps bouncing between networks.
π NEW: Private Cell Detection
Running your own LTE tower? CellInfo now automatically recognises when you’re connected to a private or test network β no configuration required.
- Automatic Recognition: Cells using test PLMNs (MCC 001, 999) and US CBRS private allocations are identified the moment you connect.
- Clear Indicator: A “Private Cell (Test Network)” label appears on the Network tab so you always know whether you’re on your own infrastructure or a public macro tower.
- CSG Support: Carrier-deployed femtocells that broadcast formal Closed Subscriber Group info are also detected with their CSG identity.
π NEW: Smarter Network Insights
New intelligence across the app helps you understand your connection quality at a glance β without running a speed test.
- Channel Congestion: See how busy your cell is, derived from signal measurements. Shown as a percentage with colour coding (Low/Moderate/High/Very High) on the Cell Info tab.
- Handover Rate & Stability: The Stats tab now tracks how often your phone switches towers, your average time on each cell, and an overall stability rating from Excellent to Poor. A high handover rate while driving is normal β what matters is whether you’re stable when stationary.
- Data Activity Direction: The Live Data Rate card now shows whether data is actively flowing and in which direction β Receiving, Transmitting, or Bidirectional.
- Temporarily Free Data: Detects when your carrier offers promotional unmetered windows and shows “Temporarily Free” instead of “Metered” on the Connection Health card.
πΆ IMPROVED: Network Tab Enhancements
- Registered Network Name: See the actual network you’re attached to β especially useful when roaming abroad where the visited network differs from your home carrier.
- Stacked CA Bands: Carrier Aggregation now displays bands vertically with individual bandwidth per component carrier β much easier to read on narrow screens.
- Enterprise Slice: Corporate users on an enterprise network slice with priority QoS will see it highlighted automatically.
- VoLTE/VoNR Call State: During voice calls, confirms whether you’re using VoLTE, VoNR, or circuit-switched fallback β so you know if your call is HD or not. This only appears while a call is active and hides when idle.
π©Ί NEW: Connection Health & Live Data
These features were developed alongside this release and appear for the first time in this public version.
- Connection Health Card: Shows whether your internet is genuinely working β not just connected. Detects captive portals, shows DNS servers, metered status, and suspended state.
- Device & Service Status: See dual-SIM modem capability, mobile data on/off, and a clear In Service / No Service badge per SIM.
- Live Data Rate: Real-time download and upload speeds updated every second, with arrows that glow green when data is flowing.
- Collapsible Cards: Every card on the Network tab can be collapsed. Your layout is remembered and included in Settings Backup.
π± FIXED: Foldable Device Support
- No More Restarts on Fold/Unfold: Switching between the inner and outer display on foldable devices (Pixel Fold, Galaxy Z Fold) no longer restarts the app. Your signal graph, logging session, and current tab stay exactly where you left them.

π‘ Good to Know
- WiFi Diagnostics works best with location permission granted β this allows AP scanning and BSSID display. Without it, you still see connection details but not nearby networks.
- Channel Congestion on the WiFi tab shows WiFi channel congestion (how many APs per channel). The congestion on Cell Info tab shows cellular loading (different metric, same concept).
- WiFi Calling status tells you whether your voice calls go over WiFi. If you use WiFi Calling at home, you can verify it’s actually registered and active rather than guessing.
- Handover tracking is session-based β it tracks transitions while the app is running. Walk between your WiFi coverage and cellular to see transitions logged in real-time.
- Private Cell detection works for anyone running their own tower with Open5GS, srsRAN, Amarisoft, Magma, or similar β no special tower configuration needed.
- WiFi tab is always visible β when not connected to WiFi, it shows a friendly “Connect to WiFi to see diagnostics” placeholder rather than disappearing.
Your phone connects to both WiFi and cellular. Now you can finally see how they work together β handovers, voice paths, and coverage gaps, all in one app. Built for network engineers, private LTE operators, and anyone who wants to truly understand their connection.
